THE PLOT }................................................................
How long has it been, since the war? How many moons have waxed, waned, and disappeared into the darkness? Was it a month? ...A year? Everything seems so distant... yet so close. One could swear, it only happened yesterday.
It has been many a decade, nay… millennia, Hollowes and Shinigami have been in conflict. Hollowes, consuming the souls of the departed to sustain themselves, and Shinigami, killing the Hunters of the Night as sworn guardians of the Plus. Both aim ultimately for survival, both aiming for what they deem is right. Unfortunate as it may be, they were two sides to the same coin - both so different, opposites of nature that were never meant to do more than repel one another. Their co-existence of both races was a contradiction of the world they lived in.
Shinigami purify Hollowes. Hollowes devour Shinigami. In essence, it is but the survival of the fittest being put to application. Both are only trying to protect themselves, protect their race. Both species have found strength in numbers - Shinigami into a more organized, military force better known as the Gotei 13, whilst the Hollowes did so by banding together in packs, one of the largest of these eventually raising the kingdom of Hollowes; Las Noches. To every force, there is an equal, and opposite force. This was the relationship between Shinigami and Hollow.
Because of that natural opposition, peace, perhaps in the form of a treaty was completely impossible. At least, that's what they thought. Neither of the two even dared fathom the absurdities of suggesting peace. There were only a handful of each race that held hopes for such a thing. The few from the Gotei 13 that supported this willingly participated in experiments, aspiring to breach the barrier between the 'positive charge' of the Shinigami, and the 'negative charge' of the Hollowes. They wanted to attain what would be the 'neutral race'. Lo and behold - from the midst of the efforts, a new race was brought unto the world... the race of Vizard; Shinigami who have gone through Hollowfication. However, upon revealing the results of the experimentation, they were rejected by Seireitei; scorned as those who had committed to taking pieces of the impure, the enemy, within them. They were thought to be turned carnal, primitive organisms. Disgusted by the simplemindedness of the Gotei 13 and their inability to grasp onto any prospect of peace and an alternative way of living, they left Soul Society, choosing instead to reside alone, in the realm of the humans. There, they were isolated, not accepted by their past kin, the Shinigami; nor embraced by the possibility of new brethren, Hollowes.
In the white sands of the infinite deserts of Hueco Mundo, the Arrancar, Hollowes who had been able to remove their masks, initially received the same treatment, for their humanoid bodies. However, Hollowes were able to eventually accept them as the pinnacle of the Hollowes' path of evolution, and not some cancerous mutation that caused them to succumb to Shinigamification. Their prejudice slowly faded away, turning into something more akin to respect and awe. Eventually, packs of Arrancar, Vasto Lordes and Adjuchas Hollowes came together to create a single, great city; the fortress of Las Noches. Creating a new civilization, they now rivaled the Shinigami in everything; population, organization, every last aspect.
With both of the races having large militia-based metropolises, they were neck and neck, and as they both advanced, what ties that kept them from each other deteriorated more and more... until the last moments before what they hadn't even bothered to avoid...
War.
Or rather, the first officially declared war.
The battlegrounds took place in the spiritually-rich Karakura Town, and the unavoidable warfare ensued. Many lower ranked Shinigami and Hollowes died, and many of the Spiritual Humans who happened to live there were also dragged into the skirmish. Amongst the black-clad Death Gods and the Masked Creatures, there were two other; the Divine Archers and manipulators of Spiritual Matter - otherwise known as the Quincy, and the Soul Whisperers of the Non-Living, Harnessers of Hollow-like power, the Fullbring. Both had silently built up massive empires from within the shadows of the Shinigami and Hollowes' ongoing brawl.
For the Quincy, one of the clans had risen to power, ruling over the underworld of most cities, gathering the remaining Quincy into an organization of power, corrupting society as a feared, powerful criminal force. Between keeping their grounds clear of Hollowes and Shinigami, they had been watching from the sidelines, prepared for the day they'd leap into the light.
On the other hand, the Fullbring had an almost religious view on spirituality and the souls they communicated with. They too however, maintained a shady side to their operations. Hiding under the guise of the Christian religion, they established their own underground church. In its younger days, this 'religion' was small and only limited to certain districts of Japan, but with the popularization of the internet, it spread across the world, uniting those with similar powers under the roof of one Belief; one ‘View of God’. They believed they were granted special powers for a reason. Perhaps it was to stand in Heaven, right beside 'God', next to his Throne. They saw themselves and all other spiritual Humans as the Knights of God, casting righteous judgement in his stead. The Fullbring organization do not have quite the political and monetary power of the Quincy, but it had something equally as powerful... the power of Faith. Their religion even started to slowly make its way into that of others... and through religion… They became an immense number. Not just the Fullbring, but Spiritual Humans of all kinds.
If war were to break out between the two factions... it would be a struggle between Faith and Power.
But it was not a war between those two. It was a war, held at the origin of their existences; Karakura Town. The Spiritual had nothing to do in the land of the living, much less wage their battles there.
So obviously, they were pissed the fuck off.
This conflict lasted many months. A large scale battle every few weeks, leaving no time for the Human realm to recuperate. On the third week of the third month, one final battle came. Almost all of the Shinigami’s commanders, the Captains and Lieutenants, were sent into battle, as well as almost all of the Espada. It was to settle the score once and for all.
This grand finale resulted in the casualty of a large majority of the stronger members on both sides of the fight. Both armies were severely decimated in number, and the war resulted in a stalemate. There was nothing left to send into the war - so like a flame deprived of Oxygen, the struggle died down, and came to a halt.
Both sides were brought a suggestion from the other races; to sign a treaty. The selfsame treaty they had scoffed at not so long ago.
A conference was held; the signing of the Peace Treaty between the Hollowes and the Shinigami. Hollowes' hunting grounds were limited, and Shinigami were not allowed to purify Hollowes in designated areas. The Vizard, Quincy, and Fullbring also signed, swearing an oath to keep the two main parties under surveillance. They were the peacekeepers of the dimensions.
They might be three different races, but they all agreed on one thing; and they were sure to let the Death Gods and Masqued Marauders know this...
Our world is not your battlefield. If you do not uphold the treaty, the one who breaches it will be at war... with all of us.[/blockquote]
